Basketball is one of the best sports for kids to develop coordination, teamwork, and confidence. But how do you know whether your child should start in a Beginners basketball class or jump straight into the Intermediate basketball program? At RISE Youth Basketball, we offer structured training programs designed to meet young athletes where they are and help them grow their skills in a fun and supportive environment.
If you’re looking to enrol your child in basketball training, this guide will break down the biggest differences between our Beginners and Intermediate basketball classes to help you make the right choice.
1. Hoop Ring Height
For younger athletes, playing with the right hoop height is crucial to building confidence and proper shooting form. Our Beginners class uses a lower hoop to help kids develop the right mechanics without unnecessary difficulty. In contrast, the Intermediate class transitions players to a regulation-height hoop, allowing them to refine their shooting technique and get used to real-game conditions.
2. Level of Instruction: Fundamentals vs. Faster Progression
The Beginners class focuses on fundamentals and building good habits, with instruction designed to be simple and easy to digest for their age group. For example, shooting drills emphasize detailed breakdowns like foot positioning, feeling like they’re seated on a chair, and correct hand placement. In contrast, the Intermediate class moves at a faster pace, assuming players already have a certain level of understanding and playing experience. Shooting drills here focus more on balance, follow-through, and proper weight transfer to refine technique.
If your child is just starting out or needs more time to master the fundamentals, our Beginners basketball training is the best place to start. If they have prior experience and are ready for more advanced techniques, the Intermediate basketball program will challenge them appropriately.
3. Class Structure: Fun Games vs. Full-Court Play
Our Beginners Class participate in fun, skill-based games that incorporate basketball fundamentals in an engaging way. This keeps young athletes excited and motivated
while reinforcing core skills. While our Intermediate Class ends each session with a 5v5 full-court game, allowing players to apply their skills in a real-game setting. This helps improve decision-making, teamwork, and game awareness.
4. Age Groups: Who Should Join Which Class?
Most of our Beginners athletes are aged 6 to 9, while our Intermediate players are typically 10 to 14. However, basketball development varies for each child. We also have a few younger players in our Intermediate class because they’re ready for the challenge. If your child is unsure where they fit, don’t worry—we offer flexibility!
What If You’re Unsure? Flexible Class Placement!
At RISE Youth Basketball, we understand that every child develops at their own pace. If your child starts in Beginners and finds it too easy, we can move them up to Intermediate. Likewise, if they begin in Intermediate but need more time to refine their fundamentals, they can transition to Beginners to build confidence before advancing.
